Course Overview
Water Rescue and Physical Skills
Swimming and Physical Fitness
- You will learn how to swim long distances without getting tired. This is vital so you can reach someone who needs help quickly.
- You will practice swimming with your head up. This helps you keep your eyes on the person you are trying to save at all times.
- You will learn how to go to the bottom of the pool to pick up heavy objects. This mimics picking up a person who has sunk under the water.
Approaching and Rescuing
- You will learn how to enter the water safely. You must do this without hurting yourself and while keeping the person in sight.
- You will learn how to use a rescue tube. This is a foam float you wear. You will practice putting it between yourself and the person in the water to keep both of you safe.
- You will practice different ways to grab a person who is struggling. These methods keep the person’s face out of the water so they can breathe while you bring them to the side.
- You will learn how to help someone who is having a spinal injury. This involves keeping their back and neck very still so they do not get hurt worse while you move them to safety.
First Aid and Medical Care
Giving Care for Breathing and Heart Problems
- You will learn how to check if a person is breathing. You will listen for air and look for chest movement.
- You will master CPR, or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. This is how you push on the chest to keep blood moving to the brain when a heart stops.
- You will learn to use an AED. This is a machine that gives a shock to the heart to help it start beating normally again.
- You will practice how to help someone who is choking. This means using firm thrusts on the belly or back to clear food or objects from their airway.
Handling Injuries and Illness
- You will learn how to stop bleeding. This includes using direct pressure with a clean cloth to help the blood stop flowing.
- You will learn how to help someone who has a burn. This involves cooling the skin with clean, cool water and keeping it covered.
- You will learn how to care for broken bones. You will practice keeping the hurt limb very still so it does not move or cause more pain.
- You will learn how to treat someone who has passed out from the heat. This means moving them to a cool place and helping their body temperature drop safely.
Surveillance and Prevention
Watching the Water
- You will learn the skill of scanning. This is moving your eyes in a pattern across the whole water area to make sure no one is in trouble.
- You will learn how to tell the difference between a person who is just swimming and a person who is drowning.
- You will learn about blind spots. These are areas where you cannot see the bottom of the water, and you will learn how to move so you can see everywhere.
Stopping Accidents Before They Happen
- You will learn how to talk to guests about safety rules. You must do this firmly but kindly so people follow the rules for their own protection.
- You will learn how to spot dangers in the pool area. This includes finding slippery floors, broken equipment, or deep water that is not marked well.
- You will learn how to watch for weather issues. This includes knowing when to clear the pool because of lightning or bad storms.
