Understanding Mental Health and Mental Disorders

Defining Mental Health and Well-being

  • Examine the multi-faceted definition of mental health, exploring the interplay of emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
  • Understand the concept of resilience and its role in maintaining mental health in the face of adversity. For example, learning strategies to cope with chronic stress or significant life changes.

Common Mental Disorders

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of prevalent mental disorders including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Understand the diagnostic criteria, symptoms, and potential causes (biological, psychological, social) for each disorder. For example, recognize the specific thought patterns and behaviors associated with different types of anxiety disorders.

  • Develop skills in assessing the individual's immediate needs and level of distress. This involves recognizing verbal and non-verbal cues indicating distress, and directly but sensitively asking about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
  • Learn how to conduct a basic mental health assessment, focusing on key areas such as mood, thoughts of self-harm or suicide, and presence of psychotic symptoms.

Listen Non-Judgmentally

  • Understand the importance of empathetic listening and creating a safe, supportive environment for the individual to share their experiences.
  • Develop skills in active listening, including paraphrasing, summarizing, and reflecting back the individual's feelings to ensure understanding.
  • Learn techniques for avoiding judgmental language and biases when communicating with individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

Give Reassurance and Information

  • Provide reassurance and validation to the individual, acknowledging their feelings and normalizing their experiences.
  • Offer accurate and up-to-date information about mental health conditions, treatment options, and available resources.
  • Address common misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health, promoting understanding and acceptance.

Dr. Morgan Lin is the official representative for the Mental Health First Aid Certification course and is responsible for reviewing and scoring exam submissions. If you'd like guidance from a live instructor, you can select that option during enrollment.

The course doesn't have a fixed duration. It has 24 questions, and each question takes about 5 to 30 minutes to answer. You’ll receive your certificate once you’ve successfully answered most of the questions. Learn more here.

You will receive a Certificate of Excellence when you score 75% or higher in the course, showing that you have learned about the course.

To verify a certificate, visit the Verify Certificate page on our website and enter the 12-digit certificate ID. You can then confirm the authenticity of the certificate and review details such as the enrollment date, completed exercises, and their corresponding levels and scores.
