A suction pile is a large, hollow steel cylinder closed at the top and open at the bottom, which is placed onto the seabed to anchor offshore structures. When the pile is positioned, the top of the cylinder is initially open to the water column, allowing it to sink into the soft seabed under its own weight. Once the pile has penetrated as far as its self-weight allows, the opening at the top is sealed. A pump is then connected to the top of the pile to extract the trapped water from the interior chamber. As water is removed, the internal pressure inside the pile decreases compared to the surrounding external hydrostatic pressure of the ocean water pressing down on the seabed. This difference in pressure creates a net downward force, often called suction, which pushes the pile deeper into the soil. This downward force acts as the driving mechanism for installation and provides the necessary resistance to vertical loads once the structure is operational. The effective stress in the soil surrounding the pile walls increases due to this pressure gradient, which enhances the skin friction between the pile wall and the soil, further securing the foundation in place. The structural stability is thus achieved through the combination of the downward force from the pressure differential and the resulting increase in soil-to-pile adhesion.
