Course Overview

Subsea Field Architecture and Development

Field Layout Design

  • Master the design of subsea production systems, including the integration of manifolds, templates, and subsea trees to optimize fluid recovery from reservoirs.
  • Calculate the layout of subsea infrastructure to minimize flow assurance issues, such as hydrate formation and wax deposition, by managing heat loss and pressure drops.
  • Evaluate the technical requirements for different field architectures, including tie-backs to existing platforms versus standalone floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units.

Subsea Production Systems (SPS)

  • Analyze the mechanical components of subsea trees, including vertical and horizontal configurations, and the function of master, wing, and swab valves in well control.
  • Understand the operation of subsea control modules (SCMs), which manage the hydraulic and electrical signals required to actuate valves and monitor well conditions.
  • Design reliable umbilical systems, which provide the essential supply of power, hydraulic fluid, and chemical injection lines to the seabed.

Flow Assurance and Fluid Mechanics

Steady-State and Transient Flow

  • Model multiphase flow regimes, including slug, churn, and annular flow, to predict pressure profiles along long-distance subsea tie-backs.
  • Apply thermodynamic principles to mitigate the formation of methane hydrates, which can cause catastrophic blockages in subsea flowlines.
  • Implement chemical injection strategies, such as continuous methanol or monoethylene glycol (MEG) injection, to prevent solid accumulation and ensure flow continuity.

Thermal Management

  • Utilize passive insulation techniques, such as wet-insulation coatings or pipe-in-pipe systems, to maintain fluid temperatures above the wax appearance temperature (WAT).
  • Calculate active heating requirements using electrical trace heating or direct electrical heating (DEH) to restart production after unplanned emergency shutdowns.

Subsea Structures and Pipelines

Pipeline Engineering and Mechanics

  • Perform structural analysis on subsea pipelines considering internal pressure, external hydrostatic pressure, and thermal expansion forces.
  • Calculate pipeline integrity based on wall thickness requirements, grade of steel, and the specific installation method, such as S-lay or J-lay, to avoid pipe buckling or fracture.
  • Master the design of pipeline end terminations (PLETs) and pipeline end manifolds (PLEMs) to facilitate connection between flowlines and the subsea production system.

Geotechnical and Installation Considerations

  • Evaluate seabed soil mechanics, including soil bearing capacity, settlement, and liquefaction risk, to determine the sizing of mudmats and suction piles.
  • Understand the forces exerted on subsea structures by deepwater currents, specifically vortex-induced vibration (VIV) that can lead to structural fatigue.
  • Analyze the requirements for cathodic protection systems, using sacrificial anodes or impressed current, to mitigate electrochemical corrosion in a saline environment.

Subsea Control and Automation

Control Systems Architecture

  • Design multiplexed electro-hydraulic control systems that communicate sensor data from the seabed to the topside facility in real-time.
  • Manage the integration of subsea instrumentation, such as multi-phase flow meters (MPFMs) and subsea sand detectors, which provide critical data for reservoir management.
  • Apply safety integrity level (SIL) requirements to subsea logic solvers to ensure that emergency shutdown (ESD) systems react correctly to pressure spikes or leaks.

Power Distribution and Integration

  • Engineer subsea power distribution grids, including the use of subsea transformers and variable speed drives (VSDs) for subsea pumps and compressors.
  • Address the challenges of long-distance power transmission, focusing on voltage drop, power factor correction, and harmonic distortion in subsea cables.
