During lock-in, the pipeline begins to oscillate in a self-excited manner, causing it to vibrate with large amplitudes. Because these oscillations are repetitive and occur at high frequencies, the pipeline undergoes a vast number of stress cycles over a short period. This rapid accumulation of cyclic loading triggers mechanical fatigue, which is the progressive structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to repeated stress, ultimately leading to cracks and potential failure of the pipeline.
