It measures impedance, which is just the amount of electrical resistance or &#x27;pushback&#x27; the line puts up against the flow of electricity. Think of the power line like a long garden hose. The longer the hose, the more effort it takes to push water through it. A relay calculates this distance by looking at the ratio of voltage to current. When a fault occurs, which is just a short circuit where electricity escapes the path it is supposed to take, the relay measures the impedance from the relay to that specific spot. If the fault is close to the substation, there is very little wire between the relay and the trouble, so the measured impedance is very low. If the fault happens far down the line, there is more wire in the way, so the relay measures a much higher impedance. Simply put, the shorter the distance to the problem, the lower the measured impedance value will be.
