Course Overview
Power System Fundamentals and Substation Layouts
Basic Roles of a Substation
- Learn how a substation acts as the meeting point for electricity from power plants. It changes the voltage levels so power can travel long distances or be used safely in homes.
- Understand the different types of substations, like those that step up voltage for transmission lines and those that step down voltage for local distribution.
Planning the Physical Layout
- Master the design of busbars. These are thick metal bars that carry heavy electric current and connect all the equipment together.
- Study how to arrange equipment safely. This includes keeping enough space between parts so electricity does not jump between them, which is called an arc.
- Learn about outdoor versus indoor layouts. Outdoor sites need more space, while indoor sites are used when land is small or the air is too salty or polluted.
Key Equipment and Their Functions
Transformers and Circuit Breakers
- Learn how power transformers use magnetic fields to change electricity from high voltage to low voltage, or the other way around.
- Understand circuit breakers. These act like the big safety switches in your home, but much stronger. They snap open to stop the flow of electricity during a fault, like a short circuit.
Monitoring and Protection Gear
- Study current and voltage transformers. These are small devices that measure how much power is moving so the main systems can keep an eye on things.
- Learn about disconnect switches. These allow workers to manually or automatically cut off power to a specific piece of equipment so they can work on it safely.
- Explore surge arresters. These devices act like a safety drain. If lightning strikes or a power surge happens, they grab the extra energy and send it safely into the ground.
Control, Protection, and Relay Systems
The Logic of Protection
- Learn how protective relays work. These are the brains of the substation. They constantly check the current and voltage to see if everything is normal.
- Master fault detection. When a wire breaks or a storm hits a line, the relay senses the change instantly and tells the circuit breaker to open up.
- Study differential protection, where the relay compares the power going into a piece of gear with the power coming out. If they do not match, the relay shuts it down to prevent damage.
Communication and Digital Systems
- Understand how modern substations use digital signals to talk to each other. This is often called a smart grid.
- Learn about the SCADA system, which stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This lets engineers see what is happening in the substation from a computer miles away.
Safety, Grounding, and Maintenance
Grounding and Earthing Systems
- Understand why we bury a grid of metal cables under the ground. This provides a safe path for electricity to go if something goes wrong, protecting people standing nearby.
- Learn how to design this grid so that even if a large fault happens, the voltage on the ground surface stays safe for humans and animals.
Reliability and Long-Term Care
- Study insulation techniques. This involves using oil, gas, or solid materials to keep high-voltage electricity trapped inside the wires so it does not escape to the metal frames.
- Learn how to check for "insulation breakdown" using tools that sniff for gases or measure the health of the oil inside transformers.
- Master the routines for testing breakers and switches to make sure they will actually move when they need to, even after sitting still for years.
