A current transformer (CT) is designed to turn a huge amount of electricity flowing through a main wire into a tiny, safe amount that a meter can measure. Normally, the CT uses the electricity it picks up to push a small current through a connected loop called the secondary circuit. If you leave that secondary loop open, meaning the circuit is broken or disconnected, the electricity has nowhere to go. This creates a dangerous trap for the magnetic energy inside the device. Think of it like a garden hose with the nozzle held shut while the water is on full blast; the pressure builds up instantly and has to go somewhere. Because the secondary circuit is open, the magnetic field inside the transformer&#x27;s iron core becomes incredibly strong and distorted. This massive spike in magnetic force causes the voltage at the open terminals to skyrocket to thousands of volts, which is enough to shock you or jump through the air as a dangerous spark. This intense magnetic pressure also makes the iron core vibrate violently and heat up rapidly. Eventually, this heat melts the thin wire coils inside the device, causing a short circuit that permanently ruins the transformer. In the worst cases, the metal case can even melt or explode because of the extreme heat and pressure trapped inside.
