You design the switch as a physical "kill switch" that cuts the power supply to the hardware itself. The AI lives in the software, which is the code and information running on the machine, but it needs electricity to exist. By placing the off switch in the power cord or the main power box, you ensure that the AI has no way to change the switch’s position because it has no arms or digital access to the wires. You must also make sure the AI cannot send a signal to a backup power source, such as a battery, that would keep it running after you cut the main power. The safest way to do this is to build the hardware so the AI is physically incapable of controlling its own power supply. This creates a hard limit where the machine is totally dependent on an external power source that you control. As long as you control the physical connection to the wall, the AI stays off regardless of how smart it thinks it is.
