Course Overview
Building Safety and Structural Strength
Understanding Loads and Forces
- Learn how buildings handle different kinds of pressure. You will study 'dead loads,' which are the weight of the building materials themselves, and 'live loads,' which are things like people, furniture, and heavy snow on the roof.
- Master the study of wind and earthquake forces. You will learn how to calculate how much a building moves during a storm or an earthquake and how to use materials that can bend slightly without breaking.
- Learn to identify the 'load path.' This is the way weight travels from the roof, down through the walls and floors, and finally into the ground. If this path is blocked or weak, the building can collapse.
Materials and Their Limits
- Understand the exact strength of concrete, steel, and timber. You will learn how these materials react to extreme heat from a fire or extreme cold from the weather.
- Learn about 'material fatigue.' This is when a material gets weaker over time because it has been stretched or squashed too many times, even if it looks fine from the outside.
Fire Safety and Prevention
Fire Resistance Ratings
- Learn how to test building parts for 'fire resistance.' This is measured in time, like how many hours a wall can hold back a fire before it burns through or falls down.
- Study how to use fire-rated doors and wall sealants. You will learn how to plug small gaps where pipes or wires go through walls so that smoke and fire cannot travel from one room to another.
Fire Suppression and Life Safety
- Design sprinkler systems that reach every corner of a room. You will learn the math for water pressure so the water is strong enough to reach the highest point of a building.
- Plan clear exit paths. You will learn the rules for how wide a hallway must be and how many doors are needed so that large groups of people can leave a building safely and quickly during an emergency.
Emergency Planning and Infrastructure
Hazard Analysis
- Learn to map out risks for any area. This means checking if the ground is likely to flood, if the soil is loose, or if the area is near a high-risk zone for chemical spills.
- Study how to calculate the strength of blast walls. These are thick, heavy walls designed to absorb the shock of an explosion so that the rest of the building stays standing.
Critical Systems Protection
- Learn to protect 'lifeline' systems. These include the pipes for clean water, the lines for electricity, and the pipes for sewage. You will learn how to keep these running even if the main power grid fails.
- Understand how to create backup systems. This involves setting up generators or water tanks that start working automatically the moment the main systems stop.
Site Security and Protection
Perimeter and Access Control
- Learn how to place fences, bollards (short, thick posts that stop cars), and gates. You will learn how to space these out so they stop unwanted vehicles while still letting people walk through easily.
- Study 'natural surveillance.' This is the way you design a landscape with clear sightlines so that people can easily see if someone is somewhere they should not be.
Flood and Water Management
- Learn how to build drainage systems that move water away from a building's foundation. If water pools around the base of a building, it can soften the ground and cause the building to lean or crack.
- Master the use of waterproof barriers. You will learn how to coat foundation walls so that water cannot leak into basements or crawl spaces during heavy rain.
