Course Overview

Understanding Golf Equipment and Safety

Choosing Your Tools

  • Learn the difference between woods, irons, wedges, and putters. Woods are for hitting the ball a long way. Irons are for hitting the ball shorter distances with more control. Wedges help you get out of tricky spots like sand. Putters are for rolling the ball on the smooth grass near the hole.
  • Understand the loft of a club. Loft is the angle of the clubface. A club with more loft hits the ball higher into the air. A club with less loft makes the ball go lower and roll further.

Staying Safe on the Course

  • Always stand behind the person who is hitting the ball. Never walk in front of someone while they are swinging.
  • If your ball is heading toward someone, shout "Fore" as loud as you can. This is the universal warning to look out.

The Setup and Body Mechanics

How to Hold the Club

  • The grip is how your hands touch the club. Keep your hands relaxed. If you squeeze too hard, your arms get tight and you cannot swing smoothly.
  • Make sure your palms face each other. This helps the club face stay square, which means it points straight at your target when you hit the ball.

Finding Your Stance

  • Stand with your feet about as wide as your shoulders. Keep your knees bent just a little bit to stay balanced.
  • Lean forward from your hips, not your waist. Keep your back straight. This lets your arms hang down naturally and gives you room to swing.

The Full Swing Motion

The Backswing

  • Start by moving your shoulders and arms together. Don't just use your wrists.
  • Keep your lead arm straight as you move the club back. This creates a wide arc, which helps you hit the ball with more speed and power.
  • Your weight should shift slightly to your back foot as you move the club to the top of your swing.

The Downswing and Follow-Through

  • Start the downswing by shifting your weight back to your front foot. This happens before your arms come down.
  • Swing through the ball. Do not stop when you hit it. Let your body rotate so your chest ends up facing the target at the end of the swing.
  • Your back heel should come off the ground. This shows that you moved your weight correctly to the front side.

Short Game Techniques

Putting on the Green

  • The green is the very short grass around the hole. Focus on the speed of your swing rather than the distance.
  • Keep your eyes over the ball. Use your shoulders to move the putter back and through. Keep your wrists very still so the putter face stays steady.

Chipping and Pitching

  • A chip is a small shot around the green that rolls more than it flies. A pitch is a higher shot that stops quickly.
  • For both, keep your hands ahead of the club head. This helps you hit the ball first before the club touches the ground.

Understanding the Rules of Play

Moving Around the Course

  • The tee box is where you start each hole. You use a tee, which is a little peg, to lift the ball off the ground for your first hit.
  • The fairway is the mown grass between the tee and the hole. Stay on the fairway for the easiest shots. The rough is the taller, thicker grass on the sides. It makes hitting the ball much harder.

Keeping Score

  • Count every time you hit the ball. Each hit counts as one stroke.
  • A penalty stroke is added if you break a rule or hit the ball out of bounds. The goal is to get the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible.
