Course Overview

IED Components and Functionality

Core Subsystems

  • The Power Source: Detailed analysis of electrical energy storage, including chemical battery characteristics, voltage output, and series versus parallel configuration impact on circuit reliability.
  • The Initiator: Deep understanding of bridge wire ignition, chemical reaction triggers, and percussion-based mechanisms used to translate electrical or mechanical input into a detonation sequence.
  • The Explosive Train: Explanation of the transition from primary explosives (high sensitivity) to secondary explosives (high stability/high output), focusing on the critical role of boosters and detonators in achieving high-order detonation.
  • The Switch Mechanism: Technical breakdown of activation methods, including anti-tamper, timer-based, remote radio-frequency, and passive infrared triggers.

Circuitry and Electrical Engineering

Control Systems

  • Series vs. Parallel Circuits: Identifying how different configurations affect current flow, voltage drop, and circuit persistence when subjected to environmental stressors.
  • Switch Logic: Master the design of AND/OR gate logic within electrical circuits to require multiple inputs before activation, increasing the sophistication of the device.
  • Testing and Continuity: Utilizing multi-meters to measure resistance and voltage across firing circuits without triggering sensitive components.
  • Wireless Integration: Converting standard consumer electronics, such as short-range remote controls or mobile communication hardware, to serve as a long-distance firing interface.

Explosive Materials and Chemistry

Chemical Composition and Synthesis

  • Oxidizer-Fuel Ratios: Learning the precise stoichiometric balance required to maximize energy release in common improvised mixtures, including the impact of particle size and density.
  • Commercial-to-Improvised Conversion: The process of stabilizing and re-purposing industrial chemicals, fertilizers, and mining supplies for use in specialized explosive applications.
  • Environmental Sensitivity: Evaluating how ambient temperature, humidity, and physical agitation affect the stability and shelf-life of improvised energetic materials.

Construction and Packaging Tactics

Structural Integrity

  • Containment and Fragmentation: Analyzing how different enclosure materials (metals, plastics, composites) influence blast wave propagation, fragmentation patterns, and the overall damage radius of a device.
  • Camouflage and Deception: Implementing tactical design techniques to conceal components within everyday objects, focusing on maintaining the device's functional integrity while mimicking standard, non-threatening items.
  • Anti-Handling Features: Engineering physical and electronic safeguards that detect movement, light, or pressure, intended to neutralize unauthorized attempts to inspect or disturb the device.

Operational Deployment Factors

Environment and Placement

  • Blast Confinement and Directionality: Understanding how to utilize terrain, urban structures, and natural barriers to shape, focus, or amplify the blast effect of a device.
  • Signature Management: Minimizing the visual, electronic, and infrared footprint of a device during its placement phase to avoid detection by surveillance or sensor systems.
  • Interference Mitigation: Techniques for shielding sensitive electronic components from ambient electromagnetic interference (EMI) to ensure the device remains functional within complex electronic environments.
