Course Overview
Understanding Alarm Systems
Why Alarms Matter
- Alarms are signals meant to tell a person that something in a machine or factory is not working right.
- If there are too many alarms, people get tired and stop paying attention. This is called alarm fatigue.
- The goal of this course is to make sure every alarm is important and needs a human to do something about it.
The Rules for Good Alarms
- An alarm must be relevant. If the alarm goes off, the person working must know exactly what to fix.
- An alarm must be unique. You should not have two different alarms for the same problem.
- An alarm must have a clear priority. This means telling the person which problem to fix first when many things go wrong at once.
Managing the Alarm System
Setting Up the System
- You will learn to create an alarm philosophy. This is a written plan that tells everyone how the company will handle all alarms.
- You will learn how to track how many alarms happen every hour. Too many alarms in one hour mean the system is broken and needs to be cleaned up.
- You will learn how to group alarms. This helps the person working see the big picture instead of just one small light blinking.
Cleaning Up Old Alarms
- You will learn how to find "nuisance alarms." These are alarms that go off all the time even when nothing is really wrong.
- You will learn how to change the settings so these alarms stop bothering the worker.
- You will learn how to test alarms to make sure they still work after you change them.
Design and Logic for Alarms
How to Build Better Alarms
- You will learn about "deadbands." A deadband is a small gap in the settings that stops an alarm from flickering on and off when a number is right on the line.
- You will learn about time delays. This stops an alarm from going off if a problem only lasts for a tiny fraction of a second and fixes itself.
- You will learn how to link alarms to specific buttons or screens so the worker knows exactly where to look.
Working with Data
- You will learn how to look at the history of alarms to find patterns. If alarms always happen at the same time every day, it means there is a hidden problem you need to find.
- You will learn how to create reports that show how well the system is performing.
- You will learn to follow international standards. These are the "best practices" used by experts around the world to keep factories safe and efficient.
